In my last post, I focused on how not to read the Bible. This time, I'd like to focus more on how we should read the Bible. We need to read the whole Bible as being ALL about Christ. The Bible is not primarily an interesting story book, a how-to-manual, inspirational literature, a catalog of moral and spiritual role models, etc. The Bible is God’s disclosure of His plan of redemption for His people, which all points to and culminates in Christ.
Here are 10 ways that Jesus fulfills the Old Testament:
1. Christ is the Creator-Word of God in Genesis 1 (see John 1:1-3)
2. Christ is the Second Adam, who undoes the Fall of the first Adam (see Romans 5 and others)
3. Christ is the Seed of the Woman who crushed the head of the serpent (Gen. 3:15)
4. Christ is our Passover Lamb, sacrificed for us so that we can find refuge under His blood. (1 Corinthians 5:7)
5. Christ is the Great High Priest, in the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews)
6. Christ is the Son of David who reigns on David’s throne forever (Luke 1 – Gabriel’s message to Mary)
7. Christ is the Greater than Moses and Joshua, who delivers His people from bondage to sin and brings us real rest in God’s promised land of salvation (Hebrews)
8. Christ is the fulfillment of the Mosaic Law (Matthew 5 and Romans 10:4)
9. Christ is both the singer of the Psalms and the subject of the Psalms.
10. Christ is the Servant of God sung about in Isaiah 42-53, the One who brings light to the nations, as the true Israel.
Study God’ word with this unified, Christ-centered approach in mind and you will walk in the footsteps of Christ and the apostles. Sit under the teaching of those who teach the Bible in this way.
